PODCAST SEASONS

SEASON 1: OPIATES

The opiate epidemic is leaving victims in the emergency rooms across the nation. At the same time, use of opiates are associated with oversedation events in the patients we care for and nurse back to health. In this season of AMS, we examine the principles of pain management, the pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments of pain, and how acute care workflows interact with pharmacology to create risk. Discussions with nurses, pharmacists, anesthesiologists, and safety professionals help to uncover the risks we face and chart paths of safer care around them.

SEASON 2: ANTICOAGULANTS (Suspended)

Risks associated with anticoagulants are a many-headed hydra. Patients take a variety of blood-thinning medications in the outpatient setting which interact with treatments and therapy goals in the acute care setting. Narrow therapeutic ranges increase the need for monitoring and critical thinking on the part of all clinicians. This season, we explore the risks patients bring with them, and the risks we manage on a daily basis with powerful thrombolytics and tightly targeted anticoagulants.
